Brands are described by Paul stobart as the sum of the functional and emotional characteristics that a consumer attributes to a product or service. For instance, take a good example of a bottle of sugared, flavoured, fizzy water and a bottle of coca-cola.
Personal Branding
involves personal beliefs ,attributes core values and elements that make individuals tick. Madonna, Beckham are personal brands yet global brands building their core values and personal beliefs by extending personal activities to different areas to maintain and add value to their personal brands. We all have personal brands; our natural talents, elements or components that make us tick or achieve success. But how many have have gone far in exploiting these natural talents bearing in mind the potential we possess. We are all blessed in one field or another and have the capacity to become heroes, opinion leaders, singers, preachers, musicians, entreprenuers, marketers, doctors or indeed excel in whatever field of human endeavour we channel our efforts to.
Steps to build personal brand
1. write down 5 fields that interest you or areas of interest
2. research these areas of interest/fields for information on what is needed to get moving
3. set a plan of how to achieve these program with goals, targets strategies, budgets timeframe ,tactics feedback and adjustment
4. Select advisory teams; these may include managers, coaches, business angels, venture capitalist mentors, teachers, consultants to help in training, guidance, supporting financial needs.
5.Set up a time table for your program. Make sure its not interupting or conflicting with your daily time table
6. Measure your achievments, activities day by day, month by month or hour by hour depending on field or interest you are in and bench mark your results with top performers or competitors. Don't give up.
7. Seek to learn more by training others and looking at other opporntunities that may be of interest to you and will help build your personal branding.

putting together a great sale proposal
. To Justify.
Make it clear how your proposal is going to make their investment worthwhile, and when they should start to see results. Charts and graphs are very useful ways to help convey this, and the more colorful and easily understood, the better.
Sections.
Your sales proposal should contain the following sections:
1. Theme and Introduction.
In order to ensure that your proposal get read, make sure that your theme is clear and your headline is not too "salesy." You can simply state the reason for your proposal, and how your company is going to help your prospect achieve his or her goals.
2. Current Situation.
This is where you demonstrate a clear understanding of your client's need, or in other words, you identify the problem your services intend to solve. You must convey authority in this section without appearing to be pushy or looking like an arrogant know-it-all.
3. Objectives.
In this section, you want to allow your client to see how you will be helping his or her business. Don't make a lot or promises, just keep it simple, use examples, and make sure it's clear that your business is the only solution.
4. Approach.
Here is where you lay out the details of how you are going to deliver your services. This can be a little tricky, as you want to be clear enough to be understood, but you want to make sure that you aren't give away any proprietary secrets or give them any recommendations on how they would be able to get the job done themselves or elsewhere. This is a good place to include timelines and deliverables.
5. Benefits.
Present an exhaustive list of all the improvements your client will see as a result of listing your services. Use plain, clear, non-hyperbolic language, but be sure not to leave any possible benefits out (increased sales, improve productivity, etc.)
6. Costs.
A clear and honest estimate of what your project will cost your client. Make sure that you put this section after the Approach and Benefits, so it makes sense to your client. You may not always be able to exactly determine costs, but you can detail the stages of the process so there will be no surprises.
7. Closing Statement.
Hit the high points again and remind your client exactly why your company is the best one for the job.
Appearance.
You want to make sure that your sales proposal stands out, so bind it as attractively as you can. There are many options available, such as plastic comb, spiral coil, or even thermal hardcover binding if you really want to impress.

Models for Startups: Guaranteed Employment?
In our last issue we discussed the benefits of patterning startups personnel policies after Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For, as well as other lists such as Working Mother's Top 100.
Today we suggest another personnel policy that could serve to strengthen one's company and foster employee loyalty. It's guaranteed employment.
Recently there have been a few stories on public radio about a unique company, Lincoln Electric. This is an older company that is publically traded and has a unique contract with its employees. Basically they tell their employees that as long as we're in business and you fulfill your job description, you will not be laid off. In exchange, employees agree to a variable pay rate that is subsidized at the end of the year by a large bonus that has ranged from 30% to 78% of their base pay, depending on the company's financial health.
Lincoln has never failed to pay a bonus, even during the Great Depression. And they've never laid anyone off. They continue to exceed market expectations despite having such a policy.
So here's the lesson for startups. Be careful not to over-hire at first, but when you do hire, make a similar contract with your employees. Let them know that how much they earn will depend on how much the company earns, but their job is secure as long as the company survives, so they don't have to worry about missing mortgage payments or losing health insurance.
For more on this unique concept, see the following link to a story that appeared on yesterday's edition of PRI's Marketplace, heard on many NPR and other public radio stations. http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2010/03/18/pm-spark-q/
